Yala National Park:Sri Lanka’s Ultimate Wildlife Adventure

Sri Lanka’s Premier Wildlife Destination

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s second-largest and most visited national park, covering an impressive 979 square kilometers in the southeastern region along the Indian Ocean coast. The park comprises five blocks, with three open to the public, and neighbors other important wildlife areas like Kumana (Yala East) and Lunugamvehera National Parks.

Established in 1900 as a wildlife sanctuary, Yala is famous for its rich biodiversity and is home to iconic species such as the Sri Lankan elephant, elusive leopards, and a vast variety of aquatic and terrestrial birds. The park lies within a dry semi-arid climatic zone, receiving most of its rainfall during the northeast monsoon.

Yala supports diverse ecosystems, including monsoon forests, wetlands, and grasslands, making it a designated Important Bird Area (IBA) with over 215 bird species, including 6 endemic birds. It also shelters 44 mammal species and boasts one of the world’s highest leopard densities, attracting wildlife enthusiasts and photographers globally. Whether you’re planning a wildlife safari, bird watching tour, or nature photography expedition, Yala National Park offers unforgettable experiences in Sri Lanka’s stunning natural landscape.
