History and Significance
The Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil has a history stretching back to the 13th century, originally founded under the patronage of the kings of the Jaffna Kingdom. Though the original temple was destroyed by colonial powers in the 17th century, its spirit endured. The present-day temple was rebuilt in 1734 and has since been expanded into the magnificent complex we see today.
It stands as one of the most significant Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, a beacon of Tamil culture, identity, and Saivite tradition. Its iconic red-and-white striped walls, golden gopuram (ornate tower), and sprawling courtyards are a testament to Dravidian architecture and centuries of unwavering faith.
The Sights, Sounds, and Soul of Nallur
The festival is more than just rituals; it's a sensory immersion into a world of deep devotion and vibrant culture.

A Vibrant Atmosphere
The air is thick with the scent of incense, jasmine, and camphor. The constant rhythm of the 'thavil' (barrel drum) and the melodious notes of the 'nadaswaram' (wind instrument) create a divine soundscape. Streets are thronged with families, vendors sell traditional sweets and crafts, and the entire city of Jaffna comes alive in a brilliant display of color and faith.
